Reflecting on MOVE-UP: Empowering Mothers, Shaping Futures

A journey of growth, skills, and empowerment for mothers

People working together

The MOVE-UP project, launched in 2022 as part of a European initiative, was designed to support unemployed mothers in re-entering education and the workforce. With six partners from Italy, Portugal, Greece, and Austria, the project aimed to recognize and validate the skills gained through motherhood, helping women leverage their experiences for professional growth. Over the course of the project, more than 120 mothers participated in training activities, enhancing their competencies and boosting their confidence.

As this impactful journey comes to an end, we take a moment to reflect on its achievements, challenges, and the lessons that will shape future initiatives. MOVE-UP has not only provided an inclusive learning environment but has also played a key role in shifting societal perspectives on the value of maternal skills in professional settings. By following the Upskilling Pathways guidelines, the project has created a framework for lifelong learning and empowerment, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for women.

Throughout the project, MOVE-UP partners engaged in activities that provided tangible benefits to both participants and organizations involved in adult learning and employment sectors. Women who participated gained confidence, developed practical skills, and learned how to leverage their experience as mothers in a professional setting. Meanwhile, organizations learned new ways to engage marginalized groups, foster gender inclusivity, and implement effective outreach strategies.

The Role of the Academy of Entrepreneurship

The Academy of Entrepreneurship (AKEP) played a crucial role in implementing MOVE-UP in Greece, carrying out three key educational initiatives:

  • Initial Skill Assessment Workshops: AKEP organized five workshops where 51 unemployed mothers assessed their personal development and digital skills using tools like MyDigiSkills and Kompetenzkompass. These sessions provided a foundation for understanding their competencies and how they could be leveraged in professional environments. A psychologist and family therapist guided the discussions, offering support and empowerment throughout the process.
  • Counseling and Digital Literacy Workshops: Following the initial phase, AKEP conducted a series of counseling and digital literacy workshops. The counseling sessions focused on strengthening participants’ confidence and resilience, while the digital literacy workshops provided essential skills for navigating the modern job market. These workshops also included a dedicated session on crafting competitive CVs, in collaboration with Women On Top, ensuring that participants were well-prepared to re-enter the workforce.
  • Move Up Journey Event: The project concluded with a celebratory event at WHEN Hub, bringing together participants, trainers, and stakeholders. This event highlighted the achievements of the mothers involved, provided a platform to discuss future opportunities, and reinforced the importance of continued support in their professional journeys.

Lessons Learned and Future Prospects

The MOVE-UP project highlighted key takeaways for the future:

  • The need for a competence-based approach in education and employment initiatives.
  • The importance of gender-sensitive methodologies to challenge stereotypes and empower women.
  • The effectiveness of hybrid learning formats in increasing accessibility for mothers with diverse responsibilities.
  • The role of community-building and mentorship in sustaining motivation and engagement.

As MOVE-UP concludes, its legacy will continue to influence gender-inclusive policies, educational programs, and workforce development strategies. The tools and methodologies developed will remain valuable resources for organizations and policymakers aiming to create a more equitable labor market.
