The challenges of Experiential Tourism

Developing a new trend of services for international travellers



Tourism, along with tourism services have been quickly developing in recent years. Travellers become increasingly demanding not only in terms of quality of services, but also in terms of innovative ways of enjoying destinations, ways of spending their leisure time. A recent, though consolidated, trend is experiential tourism where travellers enjoy their destinations not just as viewers and spectators, but as main actors of their journey, carrying vivid memories and long lasting emotions. Therefore, the challenge for service providers is the capacity to offer involving and interactive packages so as to address the expectations of international tourists and, thus, increasing their travelling clientele.


The training aims at discovering the features of experiential tourism as developed in recent years, the characterising elements of tourists involving activities so as to be bale in developing experiential packages and immerging activities on a local level. The course will provide not only theoretical knowledge about how to design and implement experiential packages, but will also introduce to the practical programming steps to be developed when developing such type of services for tourists.

Participants will acquire the main elements and recent trends in order to develop in their local context (island, community, cultural heritage, and local village) and business (art&craft, workshop) one or more day’s tours for travellers addressing the experiential trend of the new tourism market.

The training will provide information and notions, but will also focus on practical activities, workingexercises, interactive learning so as to internalise methodology and procedures which will enable beneficiaries to acquire usable capacities on the topic.

– Destination Manager Organisations

– Travel agencies and Tour operators

– Tour guides and destination managers

– Association for the promotion and development of local territories

– Tourism organisations

– Artisans, craftsmen, manufacturers, artists

– Hotels, wineries, restaurants

Duration and date

The training will last 5 hours organised in one working day. Timing will be 9:00 – 14:00.


Training sessions will take place at the premises of AKEP, at Tsiller 61 & Ros, 11144 ATHENS


Training and didactic material will be delivered in English.

Trainers are experts on an international level on tourism having been involved both as tour operators and trainers for some years. Their present involvement in the market of tourism and education enables staff experts to share and convey secrets and experiences on the matters to participants.

Alessandro Carbone:

Master’s in Divinity (Rome, 1987) and in Social Work (Chicago, 1992). He has performed his professional practice first as a Sociology professor on an academic level, later on as a coordinator of residential services for foster care children in Milano. Since 1992 as part time, and since 1996 as full-time freelancer he has operated as adult trainer, consultant, supervisor and researcher in the social field for public authorities and private companies, for the health sector as well as for the social service sector.  At the same time he performed teaching and updated training courses for professionals in the social and health area in Italy and abroad. In  1997 he has been involved, as professional social worker, in the EU “Horizon” program and this experience started his involvement in EU funded projects which through time increased constantly. Now, after having also completed related studies at the Venice International University, he works full time as project designer, consultant, manager, and evaluator  of different European programmes, for several clients in Italy and in Europe. He is fully involved in supporting private and public organisations in filing EU projects, and he also delivers training services also for clients among which are the Ministries and Regional Authorities in Italy. With other colleagues, experts in EU project design, he has created a consulting company in Verona (Italy) – ThinkEurope Consulting – which now places value on the long expertise and wide transnational connections which he and his co-workers have developed through time. His European imprinting is also represented by his private life: he was born in Germany, raised in his home country Italy, and got married with a Greek psychologist, and therefore he speaks Italian, German, English, and Greek. His only son has dual citizenship as of his birth. Thanks to this transnational life conditions he aims to unite in practice, besides in theory, the different cultures and nations which compose the European Union.

Anestis Anastasiou:

 anastasiou1Anestis (born 14.07.1972) has studied initially Mechanical Engineering in London (University College London) getting his BEng and continued with a Masters in Energy Utilisation and Management (City University). He afterwards studied Business Administration and got a Masters in International Management (Kings College London & London School of Economics). His professional experience does include working for an important Tour Operator in the UK, as well as working for various International Companies at a series of managerial positions.

In addition he obtained a series of other professional qualifications: Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Teaching (giving him the right to teach at a university level), Proficiency in Hospitality Management from Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne. He is Certified Hospitality Trainer at the American Hotel & Lodging Association and Certified Performance Consultant from World Training Conference (Atlanta, Georgia, USA in 2008). His teaching and corporate training experience exceeds 5500 hours and specializes in: customer service and sales techniques, management and leadership, professional development programs, as well as train the trainer. He has been a lecturer for over a decade at various private colleges in Greece in business & management modules, in cooperation with reputable Universities abroad, in both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Since 2009, he has been teaching at University of Macedonia and International Hellenic University.

In 2001 he founded and since then runs “AA&Partners” (, a corporate training and human resources services provider. Mainly focusing towards the hospitality, leisure and retail industry, AA&Partners holds an ISO 9001, a unique certification for a company in the field in Greece! He is currently President of the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Northern Greece and Chief Promoter of Entrepreneurs Commons – Thessaloniki Chapter.

He is fluent in Greek, English and German, has basic knowledge of French and Spanish and is a proficient IT and modern communication technologies user. He is highly mobile, likes international travelling and has an extensive experience in various business sectors.
